Purpose
The Past Commissioner serves as a trusted advisor, mentor, and institutional steward for The Relics. Having previously held the league’s highest leadership position, the Past Commissioner brings valuable historical perspective, continuity, and seasoned judgment to the Board. While this role does not carry day-to-day operational responsibilities, it plays an essential part in guiding the league’s leadership, preserving organizational knowledge, and supporting sound decision-making across the Board.
Key Responsibilities
Advisory & Leadership Support
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner, and Board, offering guidance based on prior leadership experience.
- Provide historical context for Board discussions, helping leadership understand why certain policies, traditions, or practices exist.
- Offer thoughtful input on major decisions, long-term planning, governance questions, and sensitive matters when requested.
- Help new Board members understand league culture, expectations, and leadership norms.
Continuity & Institutional Knowledge
- Preserve and share institutional memory, ensuring continuity during leadership transitions.
- Assist in maintaining consistency in governance, philosophy, and league values across seasons.
- Support leadership stability by offering perspective during times of change, growth, or challenge.
Role Model & League Ambassador
- Serve as a visible role model for sportsmanship, respect, and leadership both on and off the field.
- Act as an advocate for The Relics, promoting the league’s mission, culture, and reputation within the community.
- Represent the league positively at games, events, and community gatherings.
Board Participation & Support
- Attend Board meetings and participate in discussions, offering insight without overriding current leadership.
- Support Board consensus-building by helping bridge differing viewpoints with experience-based perspective.
- Encourage collaboration, mutual respect, and long-term thinking among Board members.
Mentorship & Leadership Development
- Serve as a mentor to current and future Board members, particularly those stepping into leadership roles for the first time.
- Provide informal coaching to officers when challenges arise, helping leaders grow into their roles effectively.
- Encourage volunteer engagement and leadership development throughout the league.
Desired Skills & Qualifications
- Prior service as Commissioner of The Relics.
- Demonstrated leadership, integrity, and commitment to the league.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to provide constructive, balanced advice.
- Willingness to support current leadership without micromanaging or revisiting past decisions unnecessarily.
- Respected presence within the league and community.
- Deep understanding of league operations, culture, and governance.
Time Commitment
- Attend Board meetings and major league events as able.
- Provide guidance and support on an as-needed basis.
- Flexible involvement depending on league needs and leadership transitions.
- No required operational or administrative workload.
Reporting & Accountability
- Serves as a voting Board member as defined by league by-laws.
- Reports to the Board as a whole.
- Expected to act in the best long-term interest of The Relics and support the success of current leadership.
